Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Uglies is about a future society that until you turn sixteen and have the “operation” you are considered ugly, flawed, not the typical pretty the world believes is the ideal beautiful. Tally is the main character and she is almost sixteen and can’t wait to have the operation and become pretty. Right before she turns sixteen Tally meets a rebellious and adventurous girl named Shay. Shay doesn’t want to have the operation. They quickly become friends and right before their operations, Shay disappears. Tally knows that Shay has left to go be with a rebel group of Uglies in an place known as The Smoke. The authorities give Tally and ultimatum: find Shay and betray The Smoke or never turn pretty. This begins Tally’s adventure. I’m excited to continue reading the series.
The Pirate Ruse by Marcia Lynn McClure
During a time when the United States was in war with King George, Cristabel Albay finds herself kidnapped from her home and taken aboard an enemy ship. The enemy ship is attacked by pirates, and she is captured by the evil pirate, Bully Booth. No sooner had Cristabel been taken by Bully Booth that another pirate ship, guided by the handsome Captain Navarrone, forces itself upon Bully’s ship and claims Cristabel as their prisoner. Captain Navarrone is known for his clemency, so Cristabel knows she is safe, but is her heart… I loved this book, I couldn’t put it down. I would love Marcia Lynn McClure to continue writing pirate books.
Take a Walk with Me by Marcia Lynn McClure
Take a Walk With Me is a sweet modern love story with a couple of calculating grandparents. Dottie is in trouble. Her granddaughter (Cozy) catches her spying on the new neighbor (Buckly) and his grandson (Jesse) while they do yard work. After Dottie and Cozy take the dashing neighbor and his handsome grandson banana bread, friendships and plans develop. Buckly and Dottie devise a plan that puts Cozy and Jesse together as much as possible. Cozy and Jesse go unknowingly along with the plan because they see the possibility of something special between their grandparents. Talk a Walk With Me was a fast and fun read and I enjoyed it. Although it is hard for me not to enjoy something by Marcia Lynn McClure!
Vengeance by Clair Poulson
Vengeance is about a girl (Aubree) who testified against her father in a murder trial when she was eight years old. Her testimony is what put her father in prison. Shortly after the trial, her mother married one of the trial lawyers and had twins. Ten years later, Aubree’s father is released from prison and is looking for his daughter. Fearing for her life, she takes the twins and flees the country. Vengeance had a lot of twist and turns in the plot. It has a young hero that takes it upon himself to protect Aubree and her half-siblings. Vengeance was not my favorite Clair Poulson book, but I liked it all the same.
The Grimm Legacy by Polly Shulman
Elizabeth is thrilled when she gets a job at the Repository, which is a lot like a library but for historical objects instead of books. She starts asking a lot of questions when she hears there is a Grimm Collection. Once she gains access to the Grimm Collection, she sees all the objects from the Grimm fairy tales, such as the sinister mirror from Snow White, the ballet slippers from the twelve dancing princesses, and a mermaid comb just to mention a few. Some of the most powerful objects from the Grimm Collection have started disappearing. Elizabeth and her fellow co-workers set off on adventures of solving the mysteries of the thefts. This book was also a easy and fast read. It will be interesting to see if the author makes a sequel.
